From 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday, 19 March, Royal Plaza on Scotts (RP) will be taking part in Earth Hour 2016. This will be the seventh year that RP is participating in this green movement. Non-essential lights in the hotel will be switched off and lights will be dimmed in the lobby and at Carousel, leaving only emergency lights to facilitate guests’ movements.
Information about Earth Hour will be shared on the TV screens around the hotel to encourage guests’ support and participation by switching off unused electronic devices and lights in their rooms.
Guests who are dining in award-winning buffet restaurant, Carousel, will be invited to light up soy candles on their tables. Soy candles are a more sustainable alternative to the usual paraffin wax candles as they burn more slowly and cleanly.
Apart from the numerous hotel green initiatives created since 2007, RP received the Singapore Green Hotel Award for 2015-2016 in recognition of its eco-friendly practices and is the first hotel to go green with online newspapers accessible through logging on to the hotel’s complimentary Wi-Fi connection. Other environmentally-friendly initiatives include encouraging associates’ creative use of recycled materials for festive decorations, placing recycling boxes at the hotel entrance and in offices around the hotel to encourage guests and associates to be eco-conscious and encouraging reusing of towels to reduce water usage. The hotel’s pens are made from recycled fibre that is biodegradable. Nespresso coffee capsules which are provided in all 511 guestrooms and meeting rooms are collected for recycling.
